Robert Nickelsberg

Robert Nickelsberg has documented Afghanistan since 1988 when he accompanied a group of mujahideen crossing the border from Pakistan. His photographs help bring into focus the day-to-day consequences of war, poverty, oppression and political turmoil in Afghanistan. He worked as a Time magazine contract photographer for nearly 30 years, specializing in political and cultural change in developing countries. Living in New Delhi between 1988 and 1999, Nickelsberg recorded the rise of religious extremism in South Asia. His images have appeared in publications and broadcasts that include Time, The New York Times, Newsweek, The Wall Street Journal, Life, the Financial Times, The Guardian, Paris Match, Stern, CNN and NBC. His recent book, Afghanistan: A Distant War, received the Olivier Rebbott Award in 2014 from the Overseas Press Club for the best reporting from abroad in books and magazines.
