MF and Jagged Edge present the Reel Rock Film Tour!

August 29, 2007

Friday, September 7. Mark your calendar, write it on a stickie, get a tattoo. Do everything possible to remind yourself to be at the Historic Sheridan Opera House by 8pm for a cocktail, catching up with friends, and then two new films that will dazzle and amaze both climbers and non-climbers. In the process of supporting Mountainfilm, one dollar of the $12 ticket price will go to the Colorado 14ers Initiative, an organization that promotes active stewardship of our high peaks and will be involved with Wilson Peak access trail rerouting once the land dispute is resolved. If that’s not enough incentive, you could win a 2008 Mountainfilm Pass! If not a pass, then perhaps a gear package stocked with goodies from Osprey, Petzl, Scarpa, OR and more? Feelin’ lucky?

Some of the Mountainfilm crew got a chance to see both films at the Outdoor Retailer show in Salt Lake a few weeks back. Here are some reviews by MF staffer Daiva Chesonis that may cement your resolve to attend. Keep in mind that all three of the evening’s filmmakers have a gaggle of Mountainfilm Awards between them …

“King Lines” is about the mission of the world’s best climber, Chris Sharma, to seek out and climb the world’s best and hardest lines. For the audience it’s a visual celebration of the sport of climbing through Sharma’s navigation of the planet’s rock gardens. Wisely, it never enters a realm of vertical porn. There’s a story and the story feels real because, think about it, what else is the world’s best climber supposed to do? He’s in the position to see and forge what the next level of climbing and bouldering will look like because of his mental and physical abilities. It’s that simple. That a camera crew was along for part of his journey should be lauded. Lucky us. We’re double lucky in that the cinematography of first-time coupled Sender Films and Big Up Productions is outstanding. No angle is too steep, too far out or too wet to try. (Kudos to the unknown sport of vertical film rigging.) While minimal special effects keep it fresh, the witty editing changes the face of talking head interviews. It’s pretty much expected from these filmmakers and their crews and it’s nice to report that they nailed it, once again.

As an added bonus, the Reel Rock Tour is also screening an excerpt from “Committed,” a 6-minute preview of the new film by British filmmakers of Hot Aches Productions, winners of the first Charlie Fowler Climbing Film Award at Mountainfilm 2007 for the film “E11.” This latest endeavor incorporates hard climbing, a handful of lovable characters, and a wee bit of falling to help the simple mantra of “just climb it” resonate loud and clear for climbers and the world in general.

The short and sweet of it … Friday, September 7, 8pm, Historic Sheridan Opera House, stuff to win, Drew Ludwig as MC, bring a friend. And yes, it’s the night before the Imogene Pass Run. What’s your point?
