The Church Forests of Ethiopia

Ethiopia was once blanketed in dense vegetation, but over the past century, humans have cleared nearly all of the country’s native forests for agriculture. But there’s one notable exception: the area immediately surrounding Orthodox churches. Today, the churches’ role in protecting these sacred pockets of diversity — and encouraging the community to be their stewards — is more important than ever.
