Mark Grieco
Mark Grieco is an independent filmmaker and photojournalist who is interested in human rights and justice in the global economy. Marmato tells the story of a small gold-mining town in the Colombian Andes and is Grieco's first feature documentary. Filmed over nearly six years, it chronicles what happens when the primitive methods locals use to extract gold from the mountains clash with a large-scale Canadian mining project. This tale of a modern-day gold rush won a Mountainfilm Commitment Grant in 2012. Grieco is also the winner of grants from the Sundance Institute, Ford Foundation and the MacArthur Foundation. He studied film production at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University.
